The Fight
New York State has the chance to lead the country and eliminate copays for insulin prescriptions in the upcoming budget!
Assemblymember Forrest and Senator Rivera have been leading the fight on this alongside advocates, patients, and healthcare practitioners. Their efforts have led us to this moment with the Governor and both houses of the Legislature in support.
All that’s left is to get it over the finish line and make sure it makes it into the final budget deal.
Doing so would save millions of lives, lower healthcare costs across the state, and send a powerful message that New York State will no longer allow profits to be put ahead of lives and access to care.
Healthcare is a right!

As a maternal child health nurse, I've held the hands of new mothers in Brooklyn apartments as they grapple with the dual demands of managing their postpartum health and the looming presence of chronic conditions like diabetes. They weren’t just worried for their well-being, but about whether they could afford the insulin needed to stay healthy for their newborn children.
What strikes me is not the complexity of their medical conditions, but the undue burden placed upon them by a health system that places profits over their survival. It's a gap that forces impossible choices upon the most vulnerable New Yorkers – particularly among communities of color, where diabetes is disproportionately prevalent.
I want to thank the advocates and healthcare workers who have waged this fight with me. I want to thank all the patients I have supported over the years for sharing their stories with me. They are the reason I do what I do.
Now let’s get this done.

Assemblymembers Gallagher, Shrestha, and Mitaynes (clockwise) speak in support of the proposal at the Insulin Is Not Optional Rally, 3/13/24, Albany
“If we have money to pay for a new Buffalo Bills stadium and an expansion of Madison Square Garden, we have the money for this!”
